Internet use by seniors on the increase
More than half of U.S. adults over 65 use the internet, and one third use social networking sites such as Facebook, a report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project has found. However it found only 34% of those over the age of 75 use the internet.
Overall, 82% of all American adults aged 18 and older said they use the internet.
The number of internet users over the age of 65 represents a significant increase over previous years, and the research found that once they had the tools and training needed to start using the internet, seniors became fervent users of the technology.
The report also found that while 70% of seniors over 65 owned a mobile phone (up from 57% in May 2010), only one in ten said they owned a smartphone.
The report, Older adults and internet use, by Kathryn Zickuhr and Mary Madden, was published in June 2012.
